FOCUS: New Batch Number Indication

Our batch number coding for UVEKOL® products has recently been changed. We would therefore like to give some advice on how to read the new codes which help also calculating the period during which the product can be utilized.

Example of a new batch number: batch #JBFE0016S

 How to read this number:

First two letters: the site of production. UVEKOL® batch numbers always have the first
two letters “JB” which stand for our site in Drogenbos / Belgium.
Third letter indicates the year: F = 2008, G = 2009
Fourth letter indicates the month:  A= January, B= February etc. Thus “E” stands for
  the month of  May.
4 digits indicating the serial number of the batch within that month, thus: there is only
one number “0016” in the month of May
Last letter “S”: an internal code to indicate the production unit

In the example above the product has been produced in May 2008 (code FE). As the shelf-life is 9 months, the product has to be used before end of February 2009.

UVEKOL® Glass Laminating System – Product Information

Without any doubt, most of you very well know the different grades of the UVEKOL® Glass Laminating System. Still, we have noticed that certain aspects are not known to all. Therefore a brief reminder of the main points:
The UVEKOL® LAMINATING SYSTEM includes resins, concentrated color pastes and tapes.

1. UVEKOL® resins product range:

UVEKOL® A
• resin for acoustic glazing having good impact resistance, too
• can be used for safety glazing and lowest categories of security
• applied where low viscosity or a soft and elastic interlayer is the prime requirement

UVEKOL® S
• resin for safety and security glazing, very good impact resistance
• best resistance against ageing
• not corrosive, therefore interesting for encapsulation
• medium viscosity

UVEKOL® S15
• resin for safety and security glazing, impact resistance slightly less than UVEKOL® S or
  S20
• very good adhesion, therefore suitable for thick glass and multiply lamination
• lowest viscosity of the S-range, allowing higher production rate

UVEKOL® S20
• resin for safety and security glazing, very good impact resistance (as UVEKOL® S)
• very good adhesion, therefore suitable for thick glass and multiply lamination
• highest viscosity of the S-range

2. The range of concentrated color pastes includes 7 basic colors to be mixed with the standard grades mentioned before:

• UVEKOL® MB1434, non-transparent white
• UVEKOL® MB5225, black
• UVEKOL® MB4100, red
• UVEKOL® MB1238, yellow
• UVEKOL® MB7100, green
• UVEKOL® MB6200, blue
• UVEKOL® MB6600, violet

Choosing the concentration allows to create tinges between very pale and deep, but the maximum concentration as mentioned in our Users Guide should not be exceeded. Remember that not all grades can be used with UVEKOL® A.

3. As an additional service to our customers we are reselling 3M very high binding acrylic foam tapes, all 6 mm wide:

• 3M – VHB4910F – clear, 1 mm thick (1 box contains 12 rolls of 33 m length)
• 3M – VHB4915F – clear, 1.5 mm thick (1 box contains 12 rolls of 25 m length)
• 3M – VHB4918F – clear, 2 mm thick (1 box contains 12 rolls of 16.5 m length)

OUR ADVICE: Avoid delaminations due to incompatibility between sealants and resins

The incompatibility between sealants and resins can sometimes lead to delaminations. The phenomena - coloration along the edges and successively delaminations - only occur after a certain period of time.

The reason for delamination : Migration
When a sealant is in direct or indirect contact with the interlayer of a laminate, it is possible – depending on the composition of the sealant and on environmental conditions – that certain ingredients of the sealant migrate into the interlayer where they can cause chemical or mechanical damage. Especially plasticizers are subject to migration but they are necessary to give the required properties to the product. However, not all plasticizers are problematic, thus not all sealants are.

How to avoid delamination?
The best option is obviously to avoid contact of the interlayer with all other materials. Avoiding contact may seem difficult, but it can be obtained in nearly all cases. Please consult as well our “positive list” of UVEKOL® compatible sealants.
When one has to replace laminates due to improper sealant choice, it's always more expensive. And it's never favourable for the reputation of the glazier.
